This course is intended to cover the capabilities of knowledge (understanding the general principles, terminology, diagnostic procedures, and basic concepts of pathology, which will serve as a foundation for the study of Systemic Pathology), technical capability (identifying pathological processes at the cellular and gross anatomical level and correlating these with the clinical symptoms and signs), professional work practices (demonstrating correct handling and disposal of biological materials and maintaining a high standard of ethics, informed consent and consultation), communication skills (participating in tutorial discussions and laboratory sessions, showing effective interaction with peers and academic staff), and reflective capacity.
Meet our Vice-Chancellor Professor Zaidi
I did my MBBS from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan in 1966. Following the house jobs in General Surgery and General Medicine at Civil Hospital Karachi, I proceeded to the UK in the summer of 1968. Acquired the training and postgraduate qualifications (DLO, and FRCS) from the institutions affiliated to the Universities of London, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Birmingham.
Returned home in 1972, and was commissioned to join the Ministry of Health, Govt of Sindh. Joined the teaching faculty at Dow Medical College, my alma mater, as an Assistant professor, then progressed to be an Associate Professor, Professor and Head of the department, Principal of a medical college, Chairman Academic council and Head of Medical Education, serving the Dow Medical College Sindh Medical College, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre etc. until 2001.
Over the years , besides gaining many a merit shields, awards and scholarships, I was also awarded the Fellowships of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), International College of Surgeons (FICS), and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan (FCPS). Apart from teaching ENT, Head & Neck Surgery to undergraduates as well postgraduates, I also taught Medical Ethics at Dow, Sindh and the Aga Khan Medical colleges as well as USM, Malaysia.
I have traveled extensively to learn as well teach at different educational institutions and forums, in the West as well as the Eastern part of the hemisphere. I also founded the department of Medical Education at Dow medical college and conducted numerous educational workshops for the faculty in the art of conventional/traditional teaching, PBL, Curriculum development, and COME. I have written several books and monographs, contributed chapters in a few and written and published over two hundred scientific papers. The first ever book on medical ethics in Indo-Pak subcontinent was co- written and edited by me and my ethicist colleagues. I have also founded and edited the only indexed Pakistani journal of Otolaryngology; now in its twenty ninth year of continuous publication. I have also conducted / organized/managed and supervised numerous conferences, workshops,
symposia, seminars, and hands on skill labs in medical education and otolaryngology. I also established the Pakistan chapter of Impact Foundation, a global charity supported by the WHO, for fight against disabilities. I held large number of charitable medical and surgical camps for prevention and treatment of deafness in various parts of Pakistan, and in some neighbouring countries. With the collaboration of various charitable organisations and philanthropists, as indeed the Rotary international, the Lions Club etc I established the first new born screening for deafness program in Pakistan and did charitable work with them for many a year. I also worked as an advisor and a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) for a few years, and as a visiting Professor to the University Sains, Kelantan, Malaysia. I was due to join Dr Ziaulddin Medical University, Karachi, as its Vice Chancellor in the fall of 2001, but due to law and order situation, had to leave Pakistan in the summer of that fateful year.
Relocated to England in September 2001, I joined the University of Liverpool teaching hospital at Aintree, as a senior lecturer and an ENT Consultant. In 2004, I moved down to West Midlands to join the University of Birmingham affiliated teaching hospitals, where I continued to learn, teach and relish my work as an ENT Specialist and an educationist at this largest teaching hospital trust in the UK. Since 2009, I have been actively engaged with the IMI, in their educational programs . The 7th, IMI International conference was organised by my team in collaboration with the IMI head quartets.In 2013, I was awarded the IMI , Man of the Year award in Toronto . have been the founding Dean of the American University of Barbados since 2012, and an Hon. Vice Chancellor of the Fatima Open University, NJ , due to launch its e- learning program in early 2015.
My recent book called ‘Vertigo: A clinical guide’, was published by Springer' in 2013-14. In May2014, it was included in the list of 10 top publications by Springer. Another book called the ‘Ethics in Medicine’ was also published by Springer in 2014. My latest book called ’ Teaching and Learning methods in Medicine’ was published, by Springer in the fall of 2014. Medical education, teaching and learning,enterpreaunership, innovation, leadership, management of personnel and resources ; and above all facing new challenges, are a few of my attributes. life time academics, scholarship and education , my passion.

This course provides a foundation for understanding the relationship between molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and medicine. It develops explicit connections between basic research, medical understanding, and the perspective of patients. Principles of human genetics are reviewed. We translate clinical understanding into analysis at the level of the gene, chromosome and molecule; we cover the concepts and techniques of molecular biology and genomics, and the strategies and methods of genetic analysis, including an introduction to bioinformatics. Material in the course extends beyond basic principles to current research activity in human genetics.
Surveys the major principles of psychology. Introduces the history of psychology, human development, personality, abnormal behavior, social psychology, feelings and emotions, research methodologies, experimental psychology, psycho physiology, learning and memory, altered states of awareness, sleep and dreams, and industrial and organizational psychology.
